According to insider Shpeshal Nick, Xbox has canceled the development of a new Killer Instinct installment.

Killer Instinct fans should not expect the return of the popular fighting game yet. According to insider Shpeshal Nick, Xbox previously canceled a new installment in the series. This also means that the mysterious project the company might show at the upcoming Gamescom Opening Night Live is likely not related to the franchise.

Rumors emerged after reports of a mysterious Xbox game that might be unveiled at the show. Killer Instinct quickly appeared among the possible options, but Shpeshal Nick briefly dismissed these assumptions: “Not KI. It was canceled.”

It is unknown what project is being referred to. The insider did not say when the development was underway or which studio might have been working on the game. The information has also not yet been confirmed by Microsoft and Xbox.

Killer Instinct returned in 2013 with a new installment for Xbox One. Double Helix Games initially handled the development, and Iron Galaxy later continued the work. Since then, the series has not received a full-fledged sequel.
