Fan-made RTX remaster of DOOM 3 with Vulkan and improved graphics released

News

Recently, a modder under the nickname inkub0 presented the first working version of the enhanced DOOM 3 shooter. From a technical point of view, it is a “dhewm3 fork,” which “is itself a GPL port of DOOM 3.”

The modder explained that his project modernizes the renderer while preserving the classic look and gameplay of DOOM 3:

The ARB assembly shaders of the standard renderer are translated into a common GLSL source code tree, serving two new backends – OpenGL 3.3 core and Vulkan (1.4, with hardware ray tracing where available), selectable via the r_graphicsAPI variable. The original ARB renderer remains untouched as a reference “classic” implementation.

He emphasizes that all visual enhancements for DOOM 3 are optionally enabled and controlled by in-game “quality presets.” The lower bound will correspond to the unchanged classic look of the shooter.

A test of the DOOM 3 modification has already been published online:

DOOM 3 - DUDE source port testing

The “DUDE” project for DOOM 3 is distributed for free via ModDB. Work on the modification is ongoing.

Earlier, a modder under the nickname Justin Marshall showed gameplay of DOOM 3 Path Tracing – it adds path tracing to the classic shooter. The project works through IceBridge – a compatibility and rendering modernization layer for older engines.
