Double Fine Productions has once again become an independent studio and has regained the rights to franchises and publishing of all its games, including Psychonauts 2, Keeper, and other projects created while working with Microsoft.
This was announced by studio founder and head Tim Schafer on the Kinda Funny Games Daily podcast.
We got everything back, the franchise rights came back to us, and we got the publishing rights to all our games back.
Now Double Fine receives revenue from the sales of its games. On some digital platforms, Microsoft is still listed as the publisher, but Tim Schafer explained that this is due to information updates.
Microsoft acquired Double Fine in 2019, and in July 2026, the studio left the Xbox structure. Along with independence, the team regained control over its catalog.
After this, Double Fine also plans to revive Amnesia Fortnight, an experimental event where developers create prototypes of new games.
