First Impressions of Marvel's Wolverine: Story Praised, Combat Raises Questions

News 1

Journalists gained access to a preliminary version of Marvel's Wolverine and spent about two hours with the game on PS5 Pro. The story, dark atmosphere, and Liam McIntyre's performance, which conveys both Logan's suffering and rage, received particular praise. The plot captivates from the very first minutes.

Nathaniel Essex, played by Troy Baker, and Sabretooth will appear in the story. Cutscenes and dialogues are of a high standard and consistent with the tone of the original comics.

The combat system received a less unambiguous reception. Battles are bloody, spectacular, and fluid, but blogger Skill Up noted the emphasis on regular attacks, parrying, and dodging. The combat relies heavily on basic attacks and repeated button mashing. Unlike Marvel's Spider-Man, Logan barely uses aerial combat, and abilities take a long time to recharge. Limited combo options make battles monotonous.

In terms of visual feedback, gore, dismemberment, finishing animations, and overall responsiveness – the game is executed at the highest level of quality characteristic of Insomniac.

The battle with Sentinel also raised doubts, proving to be repetitive.

Skill Up's impression is that it's a high-quality, high-budget, polished action game with stunning storytelling, although the combat system lacks depth, flexibility, and variety.

Final impressions will appear after the game's release in mid-September.
