To create GTA VI, Rockstar specialists met with real gangsters and spent a decade studying Miami residents

Dazed magazine published a preview article of GTA VI, which features developers' stories about the creation of Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar Games is known for its attention to detail, and this installment of the franchise will be no exception.

Journalists quote the senior art director responsible for character creation. Jamie-Lee Lloyd explained that specialists communicate with real (former) criminals, law enforcement representatives, and more:

We'll meet with former criminals, law enforcement officers, club promoters, arms dealers, and any other known or influential people who agree to talk to us. We spend time together, soak up the atmosphere of the place, listen to their stories…

In Grand Theft Auto VI trailers, players have already noted colorful characters. To create virtual embodiments of the so-called Florida Man (this meme refers to a collective image of a state resident who does something crazy or funny), "on-the-ground" research was conducted.

GTA VI writer Michael Wiafe explained the approach to work:

It's easy to approach this with a cynical view and say, "Well, that looks weird — we'll add that to the game," but we couldn't leave it at that. We also need to give players a sense of discovery, not just repeat existing clichés.

This requires years of field research from the developers. Rockstar specialists visited Miami and explored the surroundings for the past decade. A whole team of researchers worked in the city. This allowed the developers to understand the defining "visual markers and nuances."

More than 50 real street artists were also involved in the project to create murals (graffiti) in the locations. And the team responsible for developing vehicle controls includes real racers.

GTA VI is expected to be released on November 19 this year on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. Nothing has been announced yet about the PC version's release window.
