It's dangerous to commit "arcade mayhem" in GTA VI - developer talks about the approach to work and shows new screenshots

Soon, developers will show official GTA VI gameplay.

Recently, an article from the autumn issue of Dazed (2026), which goes on sale on September 10, was published in the public domain. The co-head of Rockstar North studio spoke with a journalist and talked about how work on Grand Theft Auto VI is organized.

According to Rob Nelson, more than ten years of anticipation have created "unprecedented pressure" on the sequel to live up to expectations. However, he noted that in his opinion, "no external pressure can compare to the pressure we put on ourselves as a team."

Nelson also said that developers analyze their previous projects and identify things that were not implemented well enough. During development, various elements are actively adjusted, guided by their own feelings:

We look back at our previous games with a critical eye and see where we want to evolve based on what we didn't do as well as we would have liked — either because we didn't have the time, resources, or technological capabilities, or in some cases because we just didn't think it through as much as we could have. A lot of what we do is very iterative — we adjust a lot based on our own feelings, based on what works and what doesn't.

Dazed published several shots with characters:

The Dazed article also mentions a body modification system. For example, characters will be able to lose weight, gain muscle, or get fat:

Food affects Jason and Lucia's weight, and workouts noticeably develop and sculpt their muscles. And if you end up spending a lot of time away from your bed — on the run from the police or on a multi-day binge — it will show on their appearance. The effect is somewhat reminiscent of "The Picture of Dorian Gray": only instead of your soul being reflected in a creepy painting in the attic, your habits and sins are imprinted on the faces and bodies of the game's avatars.

In addition, it was noted that causing mayhem in GTA VI can be dangerous — the world will react:

With visual feedback, deep relationship mechanics, and the increased realism of the world [the characters] inhabit, players may think twice before engaging in the arcade mayhem characteristic of past GTA games when in Leonida.

GTA VI is expected to be released on November 19 this year on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. Nothing has been reported yet about the PC version's release window.
