Microsoft officially unveiled the Xbox Disc to Digital project, allowing users to transfer purchased physical game versions to digital format. This once again sparked debate about the future of discs and whether PS6 and Xbox Project Helix will support them.
Journalist Jez Corden from Windows Central reported that the main problem for console manufacturers is the components for optical drives themselves. According to him, the supply chain for the necessary components is starting to break down.
Production lines are gradually abandoning this technology due to declining demand for devices and games with physical media. As a result, manufacturing the necessary parts becomes less profitable.
This could seriously affect PS6 and the next Xbox. Even if Sony and Microsoft want to maintain support for physical games, it will be difficult for manufacturers to provide enough drives at a reasonable price. However, Microsoft has not yet announced a final position on this issue and evaded a direct question.
