Rockstar planned a refrigerator mechanic in GTA VI - developers opted for simplification

Rockstar abandoned the idea of a full-fledged grocery shopping system for the refrigerator in GTA VI to avoid overloading the gameplay.

Rockstar abandoned the grocery shopping mechanic in GTA VI, which would have allowed Jason and Lucia to go to the supermarket and restock their home refrigerator.

This was revealed in an interview by Rob Nelson, co-head of Rockstar North and development lead. The developers wanted to link the system to the weight, health, and stamina mechanics of the characters, which would depend on nutrition and exercise.

At a certain stage of development, we experimented with a system that allowed you to buy groceries and stock the refrigerator with them. We had ideas for grocery stores where you could buy products and bring them home, after which the refrigerator would be restocked. However, this would complicate the mechanics, so we had to simplify everything.

Rockstar decided to abandon the system for a more convenient gameplay experience.

We always try to find the right balance between realism and gameplay convenience. Instead of just going to the fridge for a snack or visiting a restaurant for role-playing, we want every action to have meaning.
