The next-generation console, developed under the codename Project Helix, has encountered serious technological and logistical problems, which may ultimately lead to the abandonment of the traditional disc drive. This was reported by two major publications, Windows Central and Digital Foundry.
The problem is not only related to the declining interest in physical media. Production lines for optical drive components, including laser elements, are closing or being re-equipped worldwide. Manufacturers are adapting to the dominance of digital distribution. As a result, obtaining the necessary number of Blu-ray drives is becoming extremely difficult and expensive.
Against this backdrop, the new program for converting physical collections to digital format looks like a way to prepare players for the next generation. It will allow existing game libraries to be transferred to a digital environment, including in case Project Helix is released without a built-in disc drive.
