The DOOM: The Dark Ages Revelations expansion was created under conditions of intense crunch: former game producer Andrew Willis said that for two months he worked 12 hours daily, and sometimes spent 17 hours at work.

DOOM: The Dark Ages received the Revelations expansion in early July, more than a year after its release. Despite positive reviews, developers had to pay a high price for it. In addition to layoffs at id Software, the team worked overtime for a long time.

Willis said that almost the entire team made such sacrifices voluntarily. A significant part of the expansion was created in just 3–4 months.

We had people who had worked in Hollywood for 20 years and in the game industry for 10, and they said it was the worst crunch they had ever been a part of.

At the same time, layoffs at id Software happened the day before Revelations was released. Willis himself was among those laid off.

You put so much energy, so many hours of your life into a project and give up so much to get it to release, and then you get fired the day before. It's an incredibly surreal feeling.
