FunnyPlaying develops Retro Pixel MiniGB handheld console - a mini Game Boy version with cartridge support

Game Boy DMG fans will surely be interested in the new handheld console from FunnyPlaying. It will be able to run physical Game Boy cartridges and emulate ROM files, and will most likely be released under the name Retro Pixel MiniGB.

FunnyPlaying shared a video and an image of its upcoming handheld console, which may be called Retro Pixel MiniGB, with Retro Dodo.

It can run physical Game Boy cartridges and emulate ROM files. The new device looks like a miniature Game Boy DMG, modified to match the width of a Game Boy cartridge.

Unfortunately, FunnyPlaying did not disclose any technical specifications, price, or release date for the device, but Retro Dodo employee Brandon Saltalamacchia shared his assumptions about the Retro Pixel MiniGB with gamers.

In his opinion, FunnyPlaying will try to maintain the same screen size as the original Game Boy – about 2.6 inches. The video features a modern color backlit display, and the ability to install a Game Boy Color cartridge suggests that the console will be able to run games for both GB and GBC.

The buttons also look similar, especially the D-pad, so this likely means FunnyPlaying is using original or third-party DMG-style buttons. The developers even added beveled Start/Select buttons and a slanted speaker grille in the bottom right corner.

In the video, the user presses a menu button, which opens a simple emulation menu. It allows access to ROM files on the TF card, as well as saving and loading games on the fly. Plus, the settings include various customization options such as brightness, volume, and more.
