No Super Game: Sega Reveals Reason for Canceling Ambitious Project
Sega has revealed the reason for canceling Super Game. The large-scale service project turned out to be too expensive and risky for the company.
Super Game was announced back in 2021 as a next-generation project in the game-as-a-service format. The company wanted to create a new intellectual property that would gain global popularity and develop for many years.
Sega CEO Shuji Utsumi told Nikkei that over time, the costs of development and further maintenance of the project grew significantly more than expected. Analysis showed that the necessary investments became too risky in the current market conditions.
However, Sega is not abandoning games-as-a-service. The company continues to develop Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis, Sega Football Club Champions 2026, and Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage. Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is also planned to be developed as a constantly updated service.
The decision followed the cancellation of Hyenas and against the backdrop of failures of expensive games-as-a-service in the industry. Sega considers launching another such large-scale project too risky.
