"No, We're Making Starfield": Bethesda Wanted to Develop The Elder Scrolls VI, But Todd Howard Intervened and Pushed for the Space RPG

Recently, gamers once again remembered The Elder Scrolls VI. The reason was not news from Bethesda Game Studios itself, but an interview with one of the studio's former developers.

As it turned out, after Fallout 4, almost everyone at Bethesda wanted to make a new installment of TES. However, it didn't happen.

In a conversation with FRVR, Kurt Kuhlmann said that specialists first switched to creating Fallout 76, and then started making Starfield, although some preliminary decisions for TES VI had already been made: "We all expected [TES VI] to come out after Fallout 4."

But the developers' desire clashed with the vision of one person — Todd Howard once came and announced that they would now be making Starfield:

Todd told us, "No, we're going to make Starfield. I got approval for this. This will be a new intellectual property [franchise]. This will be an ambitious project. This will be the best space RPG ever created."

Kuhlmann himself and most of the Bethesda staff at the time wanted to work on TES VI:

[TES VI] is exactly what most people wanted to do. There wasn't a mood like, "Hey, Todd, we all really want to make this space game." Rather, it was like, "Guess what, team? We're making this space game."

Many years have passed since the announcement of The Elder Scrolls VI, and so far the project has neither a specific release date nor an approximate release window. It is only known that Bethesda Game Studios is working on it. The team has big plans: new projects for the Fallout franchise have already been announced, including a full-fledged numbered installment of Fallout 5, as well as remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.
