Luminary Developer Criticized for AI-Generated Voice Acting, But It Turned Out to Be His Wife's Voice

News

The game's creator insists he's married to a human, not an AI avatar.

This summer, the cooperative action-RPG Luminary (or "Warrior of Light" in Russian localization) was released on PC via Steam. The project didn't become a mega-hit: at launch, the peak online player count almost reached 400, but then quickly lost its audience, and recently the online indicator doesn't even rise to 10 users.

However, in September, AI opponents turned their attention to Luminary. According to some individuals, the game uses AI-generated voice acting.

The developer responded to one of the negative reviews on Steam — he claims that's his wife's voice:

While my wife may not be the best voice actress (it was her first time doing something like this), I can assure you: she is a real person, not an AI. We don't use AI in our game at all — we are just indie developers doing our thing with the resources we have.

Then the author of Luminary posted a screenshot of his response on social media and captioned it:

My wife is a living person, really! Is it true that nowadays, upon hearing a voice in an indie game that doesn't sound like AAA projects, people automatically think: "This was generated by AI"?.

According to SteamDB data, this story of mistaken AI accusations has not yet attracted players to Luminary, but at least some users have learned about the project's existence.
