Diablo V takes a cue from Dragon Age and Baldur's Gate - Blizzard changes the familiar formula

One of the main changes will be a caravan that will travel with the hero. In it, you can rest, communicate with characters, and gain experience, reminiscent of camps from classic story-driven RPGs.

Jennifer Hepler, a BioWare veteran who worked on Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2, and Dragon Age: Inquisition, is responsible for the narrative of Diablo V. At BlizzCon 2026, she confirmed that her experience in creating traditional RPGs directly influenced the new system.

The caravan brings some of the best elements of traditional RPGs into the action-RPG formula of Diablo, offering something like a camp from Baldur's Gate or Dragon Age where you can interact with companions. These are not Dragon Age companions whose skills you develop, give clothes to, and so on, but these are characters with their own personalities... so I believe my experience in traditional RPGs definitely proved to be a strong point in developing this element.

At the same time, Blizzard is not going to turn Diablo V into Dragon Age. The caravan characters will get their own personalities and add an additional story layer to the game.
