New StarCraft Development Complicated by Ordinary Doors
Developers had to consider character dimensions.
At the recent BlizzCon 2026, Diablo V was announced, as well as a new installment of the StarCraft franchise. This time, it will not be an RTS, but an open-world shooter. After this, interviews with developers began to emerge, where they started talking about the project's development.
StarCraft development lead Dan Hay, in an interview with TechRadar Gaming, shared information about a specific problem the team encountered.
Doors literally stood in the way of development. Dan Hay explained that the team had to consider the size of the characters who would pass through these doors:
Was there any particular difficulty? Doors. If you're ten feet tall and carrying something weighing around 1,000 pounds, then doors become a real problem. We had to figure out how to make the doors [work with a third-person view]. So at such moments, the question arises: "How is all this supposed to work anyway?"
The camera change also affected the perception of the game world and allowed objects to be shown up close and from different angles. Manager Annalee Hartling cited barracks as an example:
When I watched the trailer, what struck me most were the barracks. You can see them from all sides, not just the top [as in strategy games]. I look at it as if it's landing [right in front of me].
The new StarCraft does not yet have a specific release date. The project is expected to be released in 2030.
