Work on the new Fable began around 2016, and the game was officially shown only in 2020. During this time, Xbox underwent massive changes, including layoffs and the cancellation of major projects. Among them were Perfect Dark and Project Blackbird, and in July, Microsoft announced another 1600 layoffs.
Fable avoided this fate. Ralph Fulton, head of Playground Games, stated:
So many people at Xbox consider Fable to be something key to the platform's DNA.
According to him, this attitude helped the team continue working on the game during its long production.
Fulton also called Fable important for the entire industry, noting a combination of elements not found in other games.
The RPG will be released on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PS5. The release is scheduled for February 23, 2027.
