SteamOS is getting closer to NVIDIA graphics cards - Valve has started implementing support

News 0

Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais announced that NVIDIA drivers can now be activated in the main development branch of SteamOS. At this stage, some GeForce graphics cards are able to initialize and operate directly within the system.

Griffais emphasized that this does not yet mean the arrival of full official support for all users. Work is ongoing, and the feature remains part of SteamOS development for now.

There is also a performance issue: NVIDIA graphics cards in SteamOS currently lag behind similar configurations on other Linux distributions. Valve intends to gradually close this gap.

Expanding GeForce support is especially important for Valve's plans to use SteamOS on computers beyond devices like the Steam Deck. The company has not yet announced a timeline for the full launch of NVIDIA support.
