An ambitious Portal developer almost added "more blood and gore," but Gabe Newell considered it a foolish idea

Saying "no" can sometimes be very difficult. In a recent video, Valve veteran Chet Faliszek recounted how the Portal developers once found themselves in such a situation.

Faliszek worked as a writer at Valve from 2004 to 2017 and participated in the development of Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, Counter-Strike, and Left 4 Dead. According to him, the classic puzzle game almost received specific content — one ambitious developer came up with the idea of adding "more blood and gore" to Portal.

Someone brave enough wanted to fill the entire Portal game with scenes of blood and gore, and it was a terrible idea. The whole team thought it was a terrible idea, but this person was very persistent and called a whole meeting, to which he invited Gabe Newell.

Then a colleague asked Chet Faliszek to "just come to this meeting" and then "just tell [this developer] "no"" — and point out "how stupid [the idea] is."

Other people, Faliszek explains, didn't want to argue with this person, so the writer joined the discussion and delivered the unpleasant news — such scenes would not be added to Portal:

And Gabe was like: Why are we even meeting about this? This is the dumbest idea. We shouldn't add violence to the game.
Why doesn't valve hire more people?

Faliszek also spoke about updates for Valve games — the developers themselves are surprised by how players react to them.
