"Haven't seen this in 17 years": WoW: Forever launch crashed servers - developers surprised by beta's popularity

Blizzard Entertainment recently unveiled World of Warcraft: Forever. The full release is scheduled for November 4, 2026, and in the meantime, players had the opportunity to evaluate the project during beta testing.

The launch of the World of Warcraft: Forever beta was accompanied by technical issues — the servers couldn't handle the influx of players eager to experience a new way of playing MMORPGs.

Senior Game Designer Josh Greenfield admitted that he hasn't seen such player activity metrics in many years:

Guys, it was hard to sleep yesterday — I was so excited. The beta turned out to be… insane. The craziest numbers I've seen in 17 years at Blizzard and almost 8 years working on Classic. We really have something truly special here.

Senior Producer Tom Ellis explained that the beta test environment differs from the final version, and the beta is "very, very, very, very, very, very far" from it. According to Tom, there isn't usually such a surge of players in beta tests, and the system was not designed for this level of load.

World of Warcraft: Forever is positioned as "an opportunity to take your first steps into a legendary world full of unexplored lands, warring factions, untold dangers, and unseen mysteries." The game world will remain "in the first era of WoW" but will expand and be replenished with new adventures.
