The release of Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. Nothing has been said about the PC version yet, but some enthusiasts have already started making mods for the current GTA V, inspired by content from the new installment.
Users noticed that in September, the developers updated their modding policy. Rockstar Games urges mod creators to respect the studio's games – not to create mods that alter the story, original missions, and other content:
Do not expand or modify official plots, stories, missions, characters, and other elements of the established Rockstar Games continuum.
They also urge not to create modifications that add maps, characters, plots, game assets, or other forms of intellectual property from one Rockstar Games product to another.
In addition, there is a clause that formally prohibits fan ports to various platforms:
Do not modify our games for the purpose of running them on consoles, hardware devices, or other platforms on which these games have not been officially released by Rockstar Games.
Rockstar Games also requires not to infringe on the intellectual property rights of the studio itself and third parties. For example, it is forbidden to use protected intellectual property of others in mods – including music, characters, photos, games, brands, and real-world locations.
Voice acting is mentioned as a separate point – modders are not allowed to use or modify voice recordings from Rockstar Games' games:
Do not modify or use fragments of voice acting from any games released by Rockstar Games in other products. Do not use the voices, images, and likenesses of real people without their written consent.
The developers reminded that modders have the right to monetize their modifications only through digital stores approved by Rockstar Games itself. Mods that use loot boxes and similar mechanics are also prohibited:
We do not allow the creation of modifications related to gambling, “surprise boxes,” “gacha,” and other probabilistic mechanics that allow playing for real money. We do not allow offering and selling in-game virtual currency for real money. We do not allow the use and advertising of cryptocurrencies and crypto assets (for example, NFTs, tokens, memecoins, and stablecoins).
