Star Citizen launched on PS5-level hardware. A console port no longer seems like a fantasy

For several months now, AMD BC-250 chips, resembling the APU used in the PS5, have been sold on AliExpress. This is not an exact copy of Sony's console solution, but its characteristics allow for interesting experiments.

Blogger Tenpoundforty launched Star Citizen on the BC-250 under Linux, unlocking 36 compute units (CUs) to bring the system's performance closer to the PS5, and allocating 16 GB of shared memory for RAM/VRAM. After improving cooling, at low settings, it was possible to achieve about 40–50 FPS during space flights and about 20 FPS during events on planet surfaces.

According to the experiment's author, Star Citizen will almost certainly remain a PC game, although such results show that a port of Squadron 42, a less ambitious project from Cloud Imperium Games, is theoretically possible on consoles. Officially, the game is currently only announced for PC.

We have hardware equivalent to the PS5, and almost 50 FPS. This is a big win! We are practically at PS5 performance levels. Now the big question is: is Squadron 42 possible on a console? (...) I think after console optimization, a Squadron 42 port would perform better than in my test.
