Several years have passed since the release of Mortal Kombat. Content support has ended, and NetherRealm Studios has not yet revealed details of its next project, so players are building various theories and trying to find information from different sources themselves.
Recently, rumors circulated in the community that NetherRealm Studios was collaborating with Insomniac Games on a certain “AAAA fighting game,” and that it was allegedly testing a new installment of the Injustice 3 fighting franchise featuring characters from the DC universe.
Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon reacted to the rumors. Speaking about the “insider information” regarding the collaboration with Insomniac Games, he stated: “That is 100% false. Next rumor, please...”
Fans reacted to the publication and began asking the developer about his plans. One community member immediately threw out several versions of “the next rumors”:
- NetherRealm Studios is currently testing IJ3 (short for “Injustice”)
- NRS is currently testing Mortal Kombat 13
- NRS is currently testing Mortal Kombat 9
- MK vs DCU 2 (Mortal Kombat + DC heroes) is in development
In response, Ed Boon stated that all rumors were false, and also added:
Thank you for your interest. But just because a game is “not currently being tested” doesn't necessarily mean that “the game is not in development.”
Fans interpreted this as a hint that Injustice 3 is indeed in development, but has not yet reached the testing stage.
