The Grand Theft Auto franchise games are very popular, but not all parts have made it to PC. However, thanks to tech enthusiasts, it is still possible to play such projects on PC.
Recently, an unofficial PC release of Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, which was originally released more than 20 years ago on consoles, took place. A user under the nickname elmasas ported the game using PSPRecomp – a static recompilation framework for PSP games.
Its developers explained that PSPRecomp reads the Allegrex/MIPS executable file and then “analyzes the code, generates C++ translation units, and runs them through a native host runtime, instead of using an interpreter or JIT for PSP.”
Therefore, to play GTA: Liberty City Stories on PC, a PSP emulator will not be required – elmasas' project is a full-fledged native PC port.
Now GTA: Liberty City Stories can be played with 60 FPS support and modern resolution formats.
