Rockstar Games is currently preparing for the release of the new installment of the Grand Theft Auto VI franchise, while some enthusiasts recall the classics. A modification was recently released that adds path tracing to Grand Theft Auto 2 — a game from 1999.
A modder under the nickname gebdag used NVIDIA RTX Remix tools to implement modern technologies into GTA 2. Thanks to this, PC players will be able to enjoy the game with improved graphics.
Thanks to path tracing in GTA 2, improved lighting will be visible: light from various sources, such as explosions, gunfire, or fire, is rendered correctly. In addition, a dynamic day-night cycle system (Remix Plus) has been implemented.
gebdag presented several screenshots with examples of the GTA2 RTX Remix modification in action:
In addition, the RTX Remix mod adds emissive maps for some textures to GTA 2 — these define which parts of an object will appear self-illuminated or glowing. Errors with displaying the picture in 16:9 format have also been fixed.
gebdag has published the source code for the “gta2-rtx-remix” project on GitHub.
