On PlayStation 5 Pro, users have access to the PSSR upscaler. However, as Sony noted in a recent blog, developers asked the company if it was possible to use similar technology on the base version of the console.
In early October, Sony introduced a new version of the upscaler for the standard PlayStation 5 — Quick Spectral Super Resolution (or QSSR):
This technology emerged as part of Project Amethyst, our collaboration with AMD in AI graphics, and represents an accelerated version of PSSR, based on two key innovations — a simplified neural network architecture and a carefully optimized implementation that maximizes the capabilities of the PS5.
Thanks to this, Sony explains, the benefits of AI upscaling are also available on the standard PlayStation 5: “QSSR provides noticeable improvements in both detail and image stability.”
The first games to use this new technology will be Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Both will receive patches today with QSSR as an additional graphics option on PlayStation 5.
Currently, some gamers are criticizing AI technologies and calling everything “AI slop” if AI was used in any way (or they think AI was involved), but so far the reaction to Sony's technology presentation has been rather positive.
Users, like ChrlsPC, call QSSR “one of the good examples of AI use, especially considering that it does not rely on unethical data centers” (one of the problems raised by opponents of AI technologies is the environmental harm from data centers).
