"Garry's Mod Successor" Made Temporarily Free and Base Price Reduced on Steam
Players will be able to evaluate projects built on s&box.
In 2026, Facepunch Studios, known for the survival game Rust and the sandbox game Garry's Mod, released a new project called s&box. The new title is positioned as a platform for creating games on the Source engine and a “spiritual successor to Garry's Mod.
However, s&box did not appeal to many players — it received “mixed” reviews on Steam (a rating of 56% after almost 10 thousand reviews). Players noted a large amount of “AI junk” (content created with artificial intelligence) and criticized the design — character models were compared to “sausages.”
Updates continue to be released for the project, and this weekend Facepunch Studios made s&box temporarily free to celebrate the grand finale of Game Jam — participants developed hundreds of games based on this platform. Now players can check out the finalist projects.
The &box page on Steam is available at the following link; the free access promotion will last until October 5, 20:00 Moscow time; a discount will be valid until this date. Earlier this year, the developers reduced the game's base price from $20 to $10.
