GTA: San Andreas development cost only $10 million - ex-Naughty Dog developer praised Rockstar's project

More than 20 years after its release, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas continues to attract players and various enthusiasts. Rockstar Games' hit is still supported by mods, and the main character Carl CJ Johnson regularly appears in new games thanks to modders — his model replaces the main characters.

Recently, the game was discussed again on social media. Timur222 drew the community's attention to the fact that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas sold over 12 million copies approximately 16 months after its launch in October 2004. He suggests that revenue could have reached around $600 million (assuming all copies were sold for $50).

Timur222's post was commented on by former Naughty Dog developer Del Walker — he considers it an impressive achievement. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas managed to earn a significant amount, without premium add-ons and multiplayer mode with microtransactions.

Rockstar Games is currently working on Grand Theft Auto VI, which is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.
