Windrose Authors Will Remove Old Faction Ships - New Content and Expanded Mechanics from Ashlands Update Shown
A new approach to customization requires sacrifices.
Recently, Kraken Express studio reminded players about the survival game Windrose, which features pirates. They presented new teasers for the upcoming Ashlands update, which will add a lot of new content to the game.
The developers decided to rethink their approach to ship customization:
We intended to expand this system from the very beginning, however, when it came time to seriously develop it, the limitations of the initial approach became much more apparent. Currently, the system effectively offers three ship variations: basic, Coastal Brotherhood, and Blackbeards. At first glance, this division works well for faction individuality and allows each variant to retain its own character. But as the game developed, it became increasingly clear that along with this expressiveness, we also acquired a whole host of limitations.
As a result, it was decided to abandon separate faction versions of ships. Instead of choosing between basic and faction versions — for example, Coastal Brotherhood or Blackbeards — players will choose the ship class itself, and then customize it to their liking.
New opportunities to change the ship's appearance will appear in Windrose. Some elements that previously existed only as part of specific faction variants will be included in the general customization system, and new elements will also be added.
In addition, ship interior customization will be expanded; simultaneously, the developers are working on new systems related to the ship itself.
The new approach has its drawbacks: existing faction versions of ships will be removed. The developers promise to reveal the details of the transition to the new customization system later.
The release of the Ashlands update for Windrose is expected "this winter". The game continues to be developed in Steam Early Access.
