Recently, a new discussion unfolded on social media. Players began sharing their “top 5 favorite cRPGs.” One of the key authors of the acclaimed Disco Elysium also joined the discussion, deciding to talk about his favorite projects.
Argo Tuulik included not only classic cRPG genre representatives in his selection, but also relatively fresh projects. Among other things, he mentioned a well-known game with Cypriot roots — Pathfinder: Kingmaker from Owlcat Games studio.
Best cRPGs according to Argo Tuulik, co-author of Disco Elysium:
- Planescape: Torment
- Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
- Baldur's Gate
- Tyranny
- Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines
Owlcat Games' project made it into the “honorable mentions” list (the list is in no particular order):
- Fallout 2,
- Pathfinder: Kingmaker,
- Pillars of Eternity,
- Age of Decadence,
- Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic,
- Dragon Age: Origins.
One community member asked why the developer chose Pathfinder: Kingmaker and not the newer Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous — the developer replied that it was due to personal impressions:
Both games are S-tier for me, but Kingmaker gave me a special sense of adventure and growth with my party that I hadn't experienced since Baldur's Gate II — and, in fact, haven't experienced since. Wrathfinder is certainly objectively a better game, but when it comes to personal favorites, Kingmaker is the one for me out of the two.
