Resident Evil Requiem was created as an online game, but poor test results changed developers' plans

This year, Capcom released Resident Evil Requiem on consoles and PC. It is a single-player game where players can play as FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft, as well as long-time franchise hero Leon Kennedy. However, the initial concept of the game was different.

In a recent issue of Biohazard 30th Special Mook, producer Masachika Kawata spoke about the original idea for Resident Evil Requiem. According to him, in the early stages of development, the game was designed as an online project, but tests showed that it was not the best idea:

Working on every game is a continuous process of trial and error. For example, in the early stages of Resident Evil Requiem, [game director Koushi Nakanishi] was creating it as an online game. However, the test results conducted during development were unsatisfactory. Therefore, we decided to once again prioritize the horror concept and abandon the online direction.

Masachika Kawata also said that Leon was the first character the development team chose as the main protagonist. However, they ultimately decided that the ability to easily deal with zombies in close combat would shift the focus too much towards action and make the game less scary. Therefore, they decided to introduce a new character — Grace.

According to Kawata, they kept Leon's involvement a secret until the very end to maintain intrigue:

By keeping the intrigue around the full picture of the game, which was supposed to combine horror and action, until the very end, we were able to maintain interest in it right up to the release.

Currently, a story expansion is being created for Resident Evil Requiem. It seems that one of the developers recently accidentally revealed some of its content.
