29 Years Later, Diablo Gets a First-Person View

Playing in FPS mode works surprisingly well.

Recently, an enthusiast under the nickname Drelvak decided to imagine what the original Diablo would have been like if it had been made as a first-person game. For his experiment, the modder used "DevilutionX" — an open-source port of the original Diablo. This project runs on modern systems and contains various engine improvements and bug fixes.

Thanks to the mod created by Drelvak, players in DevilutionX will be able to switch between first-person view and the standard isometric camera. There will be no need to exit the game: the perspective can be changed at any time.

Otherwise, it's the same first Diablo from 1997: it features original sprites, textures, game code, and gameplay mechanics; it works with random dungeon generation. In this mode, the character still moves quickly.

Drelvak has not yet released his project to the public. Currently, another enthusiast is also developing a modification for Diablo II: Resurrected that adds a first-person view to the game.
