Sony Sells VR Technologies. What Will Happen to PlayStation VR2 Now?

Sony has sold some patents for virtual and augmented reality technologies. This does not mean that the company is abandoning PlayStation VR2 or future gaming headsets.

Sony sold some patents for virtual and augmented reality technologies to Meta*. The deal does not mean an abandonment of PlayStation VR2 or the development of future gaming headsets.

The patents were transferred by Sony Group Corporation, not Sony Interactive Entertainment, which is responsible for PlayStation. According to available data, the sold technologies were primarily intended for corporate XR solutions and research, rather than gaming devices.

There is no confirmation that Meta* received key PlayStation VR2 technologies. The amount of the deal is unknown, although an agreement to transfer patents was reached back in December 2025.

At the same time, Sony still owns the Mimic trademark, associated with an experimental controller that uses haptic feedback and spatial technologies. It was developed for interactive VR projects, but the company has not announced plans to release the device.

The sale of patents does not prove that Sony is curtailing the development of gaming VR. However, it also does not confirm the preparation of new headsets – the future of virtual reality on PlayStation remains uncertain.
