Recently, a story by a gamer under the nickname sugarzebracakes went viral in the World of Warcraft community. She noticed that someone was logging into her account and selling, as well as destroying, items.
Her suspicions began to fall on her own husband. According to sugarzebracakes, her husband has “severe depression and is just drowning in it.” When she tries to invite him somewhere, he doesn't go and can lie in bed all day. For the past year, she has been trying to “focus more on herself and go out without her husband.”
About two weeks ago, something strange started happening with her character in World of Warcraft:
I reminded my husband that I was going to a concert. He got angry at me and didn't speak to me for about a week. One day, I logged into the game to do a couple of “mythics” while he wasn't talking to me, and I noticed that my staff (which I crafted) was gone. I went to the item restoration section and saw that it had been destroyed. I thought that maybe I had accidentally deleted it myself.
The day before the concert, sugarzebracakes' husband messaged her while she was at work, claiming that she had logged into World of Warcraft and asked him for gold:
He wrote: “Were you hacked or do you need to tell me something??” I was shocked and thought: “What the heck, I'm at work.” When I logged into the account, I saw that the rewards from the Great Vault were missing, so I changed the passwords for both my email accounts and my Battle.net account.
Then, sugarzebracakes says, her husband got angry at her again for another reason and “the next day, one of my characters' gear was destroyed again. Not sold, but destroyed.”
She began to suspect her husband, and after contacting Blizzard support, it became known that “there was no suspicious activity on the account”:
I think it's my husband because we know each other's computer passwords. And I don't log out of Battle.net on my PC [...] After the last incident, I changed my PC password without telling him and log out of Battle.net. When I have to go to work again, I'll check if my gear is deleted while I'm away. If not, maybe I'll ask him if he did it.
Discussion participant itsacrisis noted that “it's obviously [the husband]”:
A person who actually hacks accounts wouldn't just destroy one item or take your Great Vault reward. Plus, Blizzard could tell you if someone logged into your account from another location.
