Street Fighter 6 Producer Warned of Series' Imminent Demise Due to Aging Audience

Street Fighter 6 producer Shuhei Matsumoto believes that without attracting new players, the series could disappear in ten years due to the aging audience of Street Fighter 5.

In an interview, Street Fighter 6 producer Shuhei Matsumoto said that he and director Takayuki Nakamura realized the threat while working on the fifth installment.

We realized that if we didn't do something with Street Fighter, the franchise would probably die in 10 years. This was critical. So we needed to create a game that would introduce people to the series anew and get them playing again.

According to the producer, the audience for Street Fighter 5 consisted mainly of people aged 35–45.

In 10 years, these people will be 60. It's difficult to sustain a franchise if you rely only on this group.

When creating Street Fighter 6, Capcom decided not to rely on the series' fame and to assume that young players knew nothing about it. A modern control scheme and the World Tour story mode helped attract a new audience.

Street Fighter 6 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
