Sony Lawyers Go After Hacked PS5s? Unofficial Game Store Shut Down

Users of hacked PS5s have lost one of the main sources of pirated games: Overdrive, an unofficial catalog for downloading copies bypassing the PlayStation Store, has stopped working.

Sony has likely begun to crack down on unofficial tools for running games on hacked PS5s: the Overdrive store has stopped working, and its GitHub page has disappeared or become inaccessible.

Overdrive allowed owners of modified consoles to search for and download games, bypassing the PlayStation Store. Oliver Darko announced the project's closure on social media. It is possible that Sony Interactive Entertainment sent a cease and desist letter to the creators.

The store offered unofficial copies of commercial games, and its creators were considering hosting the files themselves on their servers. This could have increased the risk of legal action.

In late September, the Relapse exploit allowed consoles with firmware up to version 13.60 inclusive to be hacked. Sony responds to such developments with updates: versions 14.00.00 and 14.10.00, released on September 16 and October 1 respectively, closed some known vulnerabilities.

The situation is also linked to GTA VI. According to unconfirmed reports, the game may require PS5 firmware version 14.10.00, which would prevent it from running on some hacked consoles.
