In October, Valve fully released an update for the Steam client, which had previously been evaluated by participants in the beta testing program. Players gained access to new options for customizing the screen in Big Picture mode.
The main new feature was screensavers. By default, Big Picture will display art from recently launched games, as well as new user screenshots. However, if desired, players can upload custom screensavers (they can be placed in the config\uioverrides\screensavers directory in the Steam installation folder).
In addition, a personal release calendar was added to the “Recommendations” tab on the main screen.
Valve also offers players a bouncing logo screensaver — a “bouncing” screensaver that refers to the classic animated DVD logo that could be seen in standby mode. In this case, the Steam logo was used as an example.
In this major update, Valve also included many technical improvements and fixes. For example, the developers said that they were able to “improve the performance of the Steam client launch” (they did not specify the exact figures for the launch acceleration).
