In late September, the remaster of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was released on PC and consoles. Existing owners of the game received it for free as an update.
The release of the updated version attracted a lot of attention, and the game's online metrics on Steam quickly began to increase — as a result, the peak number of players record was broken several times.
During a recent interview with PAP Business, Michal Nowakowski, one of the directors at CD Projekt RED, said that CD Projekt RED is satisfied with The Witcher 3 sales. He noted that even after the autumn sales ended, the game's sales are higher than before the remaster's release:
We are satisfied with the current sales of The Witcher 3. During the autumn sales period, a promotional campaign was active on most platforms, but, interestingly, even after these sales ended, we see that the game's sales remain at a higher level than before the remaster's appearance.
According to Nowakowski, current sales prove that 'the sales of a game that is more than eleven years old can be stimulated by certain decisions.'
Currently, CD Projekt RED is developing a story expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt called Songs of the Past. It is planned for release in 2027.
Michal Nowakowski admitted during the interview that CD Projekt RED expected The Witcher 3 to set a new online record only after the DLC's release:
Honestly, we expected record [online] results only with the release of Songs of the Past, so the fact that the remaster gathered so many players is a success we are very happy with.
Not only DLC is in the works, but also a full-fledged new installment, The Witcher 4. Nowakowski said that the developers do not want to repeat themselves and strive to offer players new solutions:
Our strategy is that we do not want to repeat ourselves. And our goal is for each game to bring new solutions to storytelling, gameplay, as well as to main missions and side quests.
