Farewell, Console Exclusives. AI Has Turned the Gaming World Upside Down
Artificial intelligence has dramatically accelerated game decompilation and the creation of fan-made native PC versions, with enthusiasts already working on porting Nintendo and PlayStation exclusives.
With the help of AI, the project author ported Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver to C++ in just 30 days. Decompilation of Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Strikers, Super Mario 64, Road Rash 64, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is also being tracked on GitHub.
Enthusiasts are working on PC versions of God of War 3 and The Order: 1886. While the performance of the first project leaves much to be desired, the author promises to improve it in future versions. The fan port of the P.T. demo already supports ray tracing.
The development of AI has accelerated decompilation so much that the Decomp.dev team decided to close their website. According to the administrator, previously, working on one medium-sized game could take years and required the participation of many programmers.
The Decomp.dev administrator wrote:
It is now clear that with the help of AI, the decompilation process can be significantly accelerated. It is equally clear that the social component of this process has been destroyed.
The rapid development of emulators and AI tools may be one of the reasons why Take-Two accelerated the release of GTA VI on PC.
