Thanks to artificial intelligence, many different mods have already appeared. A developer under the nickname cranebeaker decided to create a tool that will help create co-op mods.
He introduced the "Co-op Anything" project and invited players to configure their own AI agent for any single-player game to turn it into a cooperative one — for online play or in splitscreen mode.
The project is designed for Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor, OpenCode, and more. The developer has provided two main operating scenarios. If the game already has a cooperative mod, the AI agent tries to find the latest version and refine it. If there is no such project, the AI agent will have to study the game's source code or reverse-engineer it, and then create a co-op mod:
Want to play a single-player game with friends? Send your AI agent to this repository. It will study the available data, reverse-engineer the game and its engine if necessary, create or fix the cooperative mode, test it with in-game bots, and package the result so that your friends can install it with one click and join via Steam.
According to cranebeaker, if a co-op mod for a game already exists (but is buggy or abandoned), in most cases, the AI agent will need several days to work. If there is nothing at all, the complexity of the task depends on the game engine.
He also talked about several co-op mods that are already ready or in development: Deus Ex (deus-ex-coop); The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (ocarina-coop); Fallout: New Vegas (fnv-coop); Dungeon Keeper (dungeon-keeper-coop).
cranebeaker published the source code of the "coop-anything" project on GitHub.
