Universal-Modder recently introduced a modification for Grand Theft Auto V, allowing players to communicate with characters. The "NPCTalk" project is an AI-based system that receives input through a microphone and provides real-time generated character responses.
It utilizes the capabilities of Fish Audio — a tool for text-to-speech conversion and voice cloning. Players can address a character in Grand Theft Auto V, and the system responds on behalf of the NPC with a cloned voice "in approximately one second" (technical documentation reports a delay of 1.2 – 2.2 seconds). This system can also link character dialogue with actions and animations.
The modders explained that they gathered all the skills learned by Claude AI into one repository built on open models. For example, they used NVIDIA Nemotron ASR for transcription, Qwen 3.8 27B for real-time dialogue, and Fish Audio Drama 3 for cloned voices.
The "NPCTalk" project has a GitHub page in the repository of user christos-antono. Since this is not a highly specialized mod but a tool, other tech enthusiasts can try to adapt it for other games.
