Lucia and Jason's relationship in GTA VI sparked research - is flirting with a character in a game real infidelity?

In some cases, interaction with characters causes real jealousy in partners.

During the extended gameplay presentation of Grand Theft Auto VI, players were able to see the interaction between the two main characters — Lucia and Jason. The recent trailer showed even more: an intimate shower scene. It will be possible to develop romantic relationships in the game, which greatly concerns some people, as they view it as infidelity to their partner.

YouGov surveyed over 4,000 British adults last month: "Can someone cheat with a video game character?" It turned out that for approximately 6% of respondents, such relationships would be considered infidelity (4% of men and 7% of women held this opinion).

About 13% of surveyed men and 24% of women do not consider a relationship with a video game character to be "cheating," but would not approve if their partner started building a relationship with a virtual character.

At the same time, 62% of men and 46% of women, who also do not consider it "cheating," would generally be calm about their partner starting to build a relationship with a character in the game.

In the published YouGov chart, men are indicated in brown, and women in red:

Texas blogger alli_bugg, who publishes content on anime, manga, and more, believes that "if your partner feels insecure because of a fictional character, then they need to seriously think about it." In her opinion, such relationships with a video game character resemble falling in love with a TV star, but "this is even further from cheating, since there is no real person involved in this case."

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.
