Outlast turned out to be so scary that testers ran out of the office to cry and refused to return

The game could make a very strong impression.

The horror game Outlast, released in 2013, became a big hit. It was the debut project of Red Barrels studio, whose team then consisted of only 10 people. Recently, Phillipe Morin spoke with GamesSpot and shared memories of his work.

They were making a scary game, and Outlast had a very strong impact on some people. Developers informed candidates about the content during interviews to avoid shocking them unnecessarily, but even this approach did not exclude some incidents:

We had a case: a person started working on Monday, and by Thursday he quit, because, although he knew about the cruelty and violence, he had prejudices on other issues related to religion — he was uncomfortable, so he had to leave.

There was also a case when during Outlast playtests someone couldn't take it and ran away crying: "I remember there was a playtest, and one person after a couple of hours literally ran out of the studio to cry outside." And, according to Morin, that woman never returned — and she "was not the only one."
