Dune: Awakening's success was not enough. Funcom lays off employees again
Funcom announced a new restructuring following the departure of CEO Rui Casais, which will lead to further layoffs despite the success of Dune: Awakening.
The studio will continue to support Dune: Awakening and Conan Exiles, although changes in the gaming market are forcing it to cut costs. According to the company, the creation of Dune: Awakening was too expensive: Funcom's largest project required significant resources and heavily burdened the budget.
The restructuring has already begun, and the number of employees who will lose their jobs has not yet been disclosed.
Dune: Awakening sold a million copies in two weeks, but over time, interest in the game declined. Player reviews remain mixed, particularly due to PvP. The addition of a single-player mode and various PvE options does not seem to have helped rectify the situation.
Last October, Funcom already carried out layoffs, without disclosing their scale. Rui Casais will be replaced as head by Scott Junior, who previously served as Product Director and Executive Producer for Dune: Awakening.
