God of War creators came up with a different name for Kratos, but pizza jokes messed up all the plans

David Jaffe, the creator of the original God of War, continues to develop his blog and communicate with fans on social media. Recently, he decided to share an interesting fact — he recalled the original name of the main character of the game franchise.

Initially, 'Kratos' was called differently — players in God of War were intended to take on the role of Dominus. However, in the end, they had to abandon the use of this name, as it became a source of jokes related to the Domino's Pizza chain.

Jaffe really liked the original name 'Dominus'. In his opinion, it sounds 'dominant', brutal — which suited the image of the character who later became known as Kratos. But other team members noticed a certain similarity between 'Dominus' and 'Domino's'.

As a result, Jaffe explains, the developers started joking every time they heard the name Dominus — uttering phrases like 'open the door, it's Domino's Pizza'. Then the developers considered different name options, at a certain point Jaffe was attracted to options like Julius and Maximus. However, the studio's marketer suggested another option — Kratos. This name eventually stuck with the hero of God of War.
