The Resident Evil franchise began with survival horror games, but over time the concept transformed. From a gloomy mansion and Raccoon City, it evolved into large-scale action set in an African country and a Chinese metropolis.
Recently, former Capcom Senior Manager Miguel Corti published a series of posts on social media. They attracted the attention of Resident Evil fans as he explained the transition from the survival horror concept to the action seen in Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6.
Corti noted that "everyone always mentions Resident Evil 3 and seems to forget about Code Veronica." In his opinion, there is a direct link between Resident Evil – Code: Veronica and Resident Evil 5 and RE 6: "it was with Code Veronica that the franchise went off the rails, trying to fit as many locations and storylines as possible onto a single Dreamcast disc." The opening cinematic in this game is "a parody of John Woo action films and 'Die Hard' — there's nothing horror about it."
Miguel believes this influenced RE5 and RE6, which became more action-oriented games. He also expressed the opinion that the "real problem" with Code Veronica is that "many developers" consider it the best installment before Resident Evil 4.
He admits to a bias against Code: Veronica — he thinks this game negatively impacted the franchise.
