In October 2026, players from Poland began complaining on social media about games being revoked from their accounts. They are publishing screenshots of system notifications; for example, MateuszGreloch had BioShock 2 taken away — he activated the game on his account back in 2013:
The Steam product key you activated has been removed from your account.Product activation on your account has been revoked due to a payment processing issue for this product. Consequently, access to the associated game has also been blocked. This may be related to the payment method you chose when purchasing the product from the seller, or how the seller obtained the product key. Please contact the key seller for assistance. Visit the Steam store to purchase this game. Otherwise, we recommend deleting the associated local files.
In addition, Steam users lost Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and other games from the franchise.
Some speculated that the keys were purchased from dubious sellers on marketplaces, but it quickly became clear that they were acquired from the official Muve.pl store. It is associated with Cenega — a company that officially distributes games, including those from publisher 2K.
Muve.pl representatives admitted the error and explained the incident as a technical glitch. They were deactivating old unused keys and accidentally affected those that were already activated on Steam accounts. In their system, these keys were not marked as 'activated'. Muve.pl promised to issue activation keys for these games as compensation to affected players.
This incident served as another reminder of the peculiarities of 'owning' digital versions of games on Steam. Some players did not know (or forget) that publishers have the right to revoke keys used to activate games.
