Some developers use artificial intelligence in game development, which many players dislike. Sometimes they automatically categorize projects as "neural slop" if AI was used in any way during development.
Valve requires developers on Steam to publish a notification on game pages about AI use, and also to explain exactly what technologies were applied for. Opponents of AI use began tracking such publications and harassing developers; browser extensions started appearing that automatically flag games if AI was used in them.
Recently, an example of one developer's statement on Steam went viral on social media:
As a small independent developer, I naturally used AI tools to assist in the development of this game, including for working on graphical elements and writing code.
Developer Matt Workman criticized Steam's rules and expressed the opinion that "the very idea of mandatory AI disclosure in 2026 is absurd" and added that for Valve and Steam, such a requirement "is truly shameful".
Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney also joined the discussion, supporting this position:
Forcing developers to write a political statement that will be used against them by the very hate mob they are helping to organize — that's disgusting.
In the past, Sweeney has already criticized Valve for requiring AI disclosure.
