Nintendo might release a more affordable portable version, the Switch 2 Lite, featuring a new processor that would reduce the console’s power consumption and production cost. The company has not yet confirmed the development of the device.
The potential new release was spotted by the Nintendo Patents Watch resource. According to rumors, the console will feature a second-generation Samsung 8LPU+ system-on-a-chip, which could be unveiled at the December IEDM event. The standard Switch 2 uses an NVIDIA Tegra T239 manufactured on an 8nm process.
The new chip is expected to deliver a 12% performance boost, reduce die size by 8%, and cut power consumption by 15%. A cheaper processor will also help lower the device’s cost amid rising memory prices.
Similar to the original Switch Lite, the new model may ditch detachable controllers and the ability to connect to a TV via a dock. The price and release date remain unknown. All information remains at the level of rumors.
