Minecraft launches on Nintendo Switch 2 today – some players will get the game for free

Minecraft has received a native version for Switch 2: digital edition owners on the original Switch get a free upgrade until the end of January 2027, while others will have to buy the game for $29.99.

On October 27, Minecraft will receive a native version for Nintendo Switch 2 featuring enhanced Vibrant Visuals graphics, store content, and a Super Mario pack.

The update will allow running the game on the new console without backward compatibility. Vibrant Visuals improves the graphics and unlocks access to the corresponding store materials. The bundle will include the Super Mario Mash-Up with 15 music tracks and 40 character skins.

Owners of the digital version of Minecraft for the original Nintendo Switch will be able to upgrade for free until the end of January 2027. Those who bought the physical edition will have to purchase the game again. Standalone, the Switch 2 version will cost $29.99.
